I attended Carleton for two years and then transferred to a school where almost everyone lives off campus. Housing costs here range anywhere from around $250/mo to upwards of $2000/mo, and whenever someone names their residence, you can immediately guess their socioeconomic bracket.
Although people try not to judge, they definitely do. Additionally, it’s just surprising how different everyone’s living situations are even though we’re all students at the same school. Some of the more modest houses require shared rooms, dealing with broken appliances, shady landlords, and mandatory housework, while some of the nicer apartments boast granite counter tops, fitness centers, and even tanning beds.
Not only was finding housing simpler at Carleton, I just really feel that it’s nice for everyone to have the same housing opportunity in College. Why judge people for having too nice or too nasty an apartment if you don’t have to?
For some reason I still realize that many of my friends at Carleton were in a similar socioeconomic bracket anyway. I think having everyone in the same housing definitely helps, but I’m not entirely sure to what degree. I've also made friends from many backgrounds here too, I just wouldn’t be able to live with some of them.
