I consistently feel uncomfortable for not having enough money at Carleton and also for spending too much money on stupid things (like restaurant meals, new clothing, etc). My family does not make a lot of money and I am on almost full financial aid. Because of my financial aid, however, my family does have enough money to spend on random shit...kind of. Honestly I don't always think I myself or my family spends money in responsible ways. That is a completely different conversation, however, than people judging me for the money I'm spending and assuming something about my income bracket. I have never had an open or honest conversation about class here. I would love to start. SES is way more than rich or poor and we need to have more conversations that explore those nuances without shaming anyone (inadvertently or otherwise).
