I am a faculty member who grew up partly on the East Coast, attending a private school on scholarship. The disparity between student Porsches in the parking lot and my single mother's struggle to start from scratch after divorce were deeply ingrained. At Carleton I have seen some students driving cars far fancier than mine, but it has been so refreshing and a joy to feel how the College works hard to ensure that class impinges on teaching and learning as little as possible.
Where I have seen effects of class disparity is in types of technology students bring to my office when discussing a paper - range or lack of laptops now, for example. I've also seen some large gaps in personal spending by some students on OCS programs I have led, compared with loans from the College that others have needed in order to participate at all.
